Your mind is like a garden…stay with me here… in that the thoughts you think are like seeds. The more attention (water) you give those thoughts (seeds), the more they grow.
Whatever you give the most attention to is what carries the most energy in your subconscious mind. This is the layer that affects your behaviours and the actions you take, so it’s important to direct your thoughts toward the outcomes you want so you can take the actions that align with them.
Thoughts Have Energy
Thoughts are real things. And, just like your body, or your dog, they generate energy.
This energy can be measured and tracked because thoughts generate photons which are little packets of energy that are the fundamental particles of light. This was discovered by Albert Einstein in 1921 and earned him a Nobel Prize in physics for his work.
Whether you realize it or not, you’ve experienced the power of someone else’s thoughts. Have you ever witnessed two people arguing? It likely caused you to recoil. Maybe it even felt like these people were directing their anger towards you. That’s the effect of the toxic energy from that person’s thoughts—and it’s more real than we give it credit for.
Another way to think about it is that mental energy draws in the people around you. Think of a time you were handing out with someone who was in a negative state. Their fearful and pessimistic thinking breeds more of that energy and can cause you to feel and think the same way, just by being around them. The good news is this is true for positive thoughts too.
What Energy Are You Taking In?
The power of our associations is greater than we think. Understanding the sharing of mental energy is just one way to see the impact of the people we surround ourselves with.
The best way to protect your energy and your mental state is to be discerning about who you connect with and listen to. Your friends and associations have the ability to enhance your energy and your life, or to drag you down.
You can use this invisible power of thoughts to your advantage. Say there’s someone you admire and want to think more like, by spending time with that person you begin to uplevel your mental energy to match theirs. This works by listening to podcasts, seminars, or reading books by authors whose mental energy is where you want yours to be.
Thoughts and ideas from other people—including what you hear, read, and watch—can strongly influence your thoughts, decisions and outcomes.
The way you think and what influences you let into your life (think: the news, social media, tv shows and movies) all affect the way you perceive and react to the world around you. The energy that you emit because of your thoughts will directly impact the world around you.
Not only is it important to be aware of the energy you take in, it’s important to be responsible for the energy you put out into the world. The best way to do that is to direct your thoughts toward the outcomes you want to see and away from the ones you don’t. You’re more powerful than you might have thought — you quite literally affect the level of positivity in the world with what goes on in your mind.
