There’s something so freeing about running outside in nature. It’s also a great perk that running outside is something you can do year round, wherever you are, even when you’re on vacation.
This winter I spent a month away from my Canadian home to take in the sun. My dream was to wake up every morning and run along the beach, and that’s just what I did.
Running has always been my happy place. It’s a time for me to clear my mind, get in tune with my body and be completely in the moment. Outdoor runs add a whole other element to the mix because I can connect with nature at the same time. Talk about inspiring!
If you’re used to running on the treadmill indoors, here are some tips to help you take your runs outside into nature.
- Fuel up – Running outside can burn more calories in a shorter amount of time than a treadmill session, so make sure you fuel properly before and afterwards.
- Adjust your pace. On a treadmill every step is predictable, but that’s not the case when you’re running outside. Slow your pace at first to give your body time to adjust to the different terrain.
- Keep your chin up – literally. It can be tempting to run with your head down because you’re anticipating your next steps. Posture is still important. So keep your chin up and your shoulders back so your whole body feels great afterwards.
- Plan your path and stick to trails. Pavement can be hard on the joints, so plan ahead and look for trails in your area so you know where to go to have the best whole body experience. Also, knowing where you’re going will give you peace of mind to relax into your run.
- Be kind to yourself. Running is just as much a mental game as it is physical. Know that there will be an adjustment to the way you feel and the pace you can maintain when you go from running on a treadmill to running outdoors. Tell yourself you’re doing great (because you are!) for taking on this new challenge.
There’s no right or wrong when it comes to where you like to run. Running on the treadmill doesn’t make you any less of a runner. For a new challenge, you may want to try taking your runs outside.
