Burgers are one of the all time favorite BBQ foods. If you’re looking for healthier ways of eating your favourite burgers, there comes a time when you must question the fluffy bun it usually comes on.
Whether you’re looking for bun alternatives because of a preference, an allergy, or just to switch things up, we’ve got some great options for you.
The Lettuce Bun
Lettuce buns have become so popular that we’re even seeing them on restaurant menus. Swapping a bun for a large piece of romaine lettuce is an easy way to switch things up and create a gluten-free option. It’s also suitable for paleo or keto eaters too.
Romaine lettuce offers a satisfying crunch and will still hold in your favourite sauces and toppings. It can be a good excuse to change up your toppings – try tzatziki sauce, or even switch to a lamb or bison burger.
A lettuce bun is the lightest way to enjoy your burger (maybe save some room for fries?).
A Portobello Mushroom
These big mushroom caps were made for burgers in between! Cook the portobellos on the BBQ while you prep your burgers. If you’re really looking for an upgrade, you can stuff your mushroom cap with cheese before putting it on the grill. Simply add your burger once it’s cooked. Experiment with different sauces and toppings- you can’t go wrong with a portobello.
Cheese Bun
To make this, grate your favourite cheese into a warm frying pan to create a “bun.” Depending on how soft or crunchy you want it, adjust your cooking time. This is one bun option you might need to use utensils for, but who cares when it’s this delicious?
This option is great for keto, paleo, and cheese lovers alike.
The Naked Burger
This option leaves room for extra toppings. Pile them high and eat with a fork and knife. No bun allows more room for delicious additions like guacamole, taco toppings, cucumber and tzatziki, or grilled veggies. When your base is a quality meat patty, you won’t even miss the bun.
